RETURNING COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE TO THE CITIZENS

Citizen initiatives are often looking for a place to develop activities. Fortunately, many managers of community infrastructure look with great interest at the dynamics that citizens inject into the city. They wonder if they can open their doors more to that bottom-up energy. How do you ensure that residents become co-owners of and take care of the space they share? How do you create dialogue, meeting and dynamics between the different groups that share the space?

We put organizations and citizen initiatives together that use their spaces to engage the neighborhood and let them exchange experiences with each other. Participate and be inspired.

SUPPORT AND GIVE A VOICE TO CITIZENS' INITIATIVES. HOW CAN WE TACKLE THIS?

Supporting citizens' initiatives and giving them a voice. How do you best tackle this? What do citizen initiatives really need? How do you reach them? How do you work together? How do you get the best out of the neighborhood ?!

ABCD stands for "asset-based community development", development based on the assets of a neighborhood.  Chloé Mercenier starts from the deep conviction that neighborhoods have their talents, motivations, and their leaders. The CitizenDev / Connecteurs Athenée project is testing this method for the first time in Brussels. Rather than passively waiting for the residents' initiative, we use this method to talk to the neighborhood and to link people who have something to offer for their community. In this way we help initiatives from the bottom up. We currently supervise around 20 resident initiatives within this project. The CitizenDev project runs in three different communities, each with its own specific character. This way we can see in which circumstances the method produces the best results.
